Along with other sociology departments and institutes at Stockholm University (such as the Department of Public Health Sciences, SCORE, the Swedish institute for Social Research etc), the Department of Sociology is also ranked at place 6 in Europe and as number 1 in Scandinavia.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as Shanghai Ranking, is done at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and is often listed as one of the three most prestigious university rankings in the world, along with QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The Shanghai Ranking measures the quality of research, including indicators such as the number of alumni and employed researchers who have won Nobel Prizes, the number of “highly quoted” researchers and the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science.
