Abstract

In this talk, Jens Rydgren will reflect upon some explanations to the emergence of radical right-wing parties in Europe. In addition to this overall theme, which entails a cross-time comparison, four questions in particular will be addressed: (1) Why are such parties more successful in some countries than in others? (2) What characterize these parties, in terms of ideology and discourse? (3) What characterize the voters who support these parties? (4) What are the consequences for party systems dynamics? The talk will – to some extent at least – be based on the recently released Oxford Handbook of the Radical Right, of which Jens Rydgren was the editor.’
